UK MP Sir David Amess, a Conservative Member of Parliament representing the people of Southend West in the British parliament has been stabbed to death at a constituency meeting he organized.
The murder of David Amess is the second in just five years after Jo Cox was murdered in similar fashion in June 2016.
The incident took place this afternoon in the Belfairs Methodist Church premises located at ‘Leigh on Sea’ in Essex, and following the news of the death of the 69 years old father of five lovely children, political leaders all over the world have been reacting to the tragedy.
Deputy Prime Minister of the UK, Dominic Raab, described the late David Amess MP as “great common sense politician and a formidable campaigner with a big heart, and tremendous generosity of spirit – including towards those he disagreed with.” This he said in a short post sighted on his social media handles.
Among the world famous leaders who paid tributes to the fallen MP is Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau.
“…on behalf of all Canadians and Parliamentarians, I offer my deepest condolences to his colleagues and all who are mourning this loss,” the Canadian Prime Minister wrote in a tweet.
“Basildon man is gone and my heart is broken. Thank you, David Amess, for being my friend, for always smiling, the great advice and endless notes of encouragement. And for our last conversation in the lobby before recess. And of course your wonderful book. I will never forget you,” said Kemi Badenoch, a colleague MP to the late MP stabbed today.
Prince William and his wife also paid their tributes to the late MP.
In a tweet sighted by ThePunchGhana.com, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge said; :We are shocked and saddened by the murder of Sir David Amess, who dedicated 40 years of his life to serving his community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues. W & C.”
Meanwhile, the suspect, a 25 years old man, has been detained by the police in Essex on suspicion of murder. The Essex police in a statement said; “A 25 year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in custody. We have recovered a knife from the scene and are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.”
